So, my husband talked me into playing in a tournament at a bar. We play a lot of tournaments, about three a week, with buy-ins of under fifty dollars and we play to win, that's our fun money so the more we win, the more fun we can have doing other things besides playing poker. We play tournaments on weekdays when the buy-ins are cheaper and spend what we win on weekends. Some guy was promoting tournaments in different bars and my husband said, "let's go, we can play against people who came to drink and poker was just there, we'll cash for sure." I was skeptical, but OK whatever.
So the promoter had these folding tables, like fifty dollar "poker tables" from Amazon or whatever. The felt on one wasn't marked at all and the other had air under the felt and pad. Neither one had speedcloth so the cards didn't slide. So what? you're thinking, that's the dealer's problem, right? Except the promoter wanted to play so we had to take turns being the dealer. I didn't realize that until I drew high card for the button (so, I thought). The cards were on the table and one of the players said, "You're dealer," and I was like, "yeah, I know, where's the button?" It took a second for me to realize they expected me to shuffle up and deal. We used to deal a little for a guy who ran casino nights, but I had never dealt a game I was also playing in. So I dealt, it came back to me. The other players had no idea how to shuffle. They shuffled like kids you could see almost every card while they shuffled. They left mucked cards on the table and threw the turn and river on top of them.
Then there was this one fool who kept saying "check in the dark" if no one had bet or raised but he would say it after the cards were flopped so it wasn't in the dark. He thought he knew a poker term and I think he checked every time just to say it. Then he had a pair of queens and the board ran out with a nine-high straight. One other player had a ten so he had a ten-high straight. The fool did not get that at all. He wasn't trying to cheat and he wasn't getting mad, he just had to have it explained to him twice and I still think he didn't get it.
The players were drinking, and talking to people not on the table even when they were in the hand. I wanted to slap them and say, "play the goldang game," but my husband is looking at me like this is the best thing that ever happened. Anyway, my husband always goes all-in the second or third hand after no more re-buys (which took forever), so as soon as he did, I called him with nothing just to give him my chips and go outside for fresh air. I thought he would be pissed at me, but he thought I did it deliberately to help him win. Not one of the other players questioned me calling my husband all in and not showing my cards.
Yes, he cashed, he was chip leader from almost the first hand. he agreed to chop it evenly when he had double the stack of the second leader. he said, "You can't be a dick, these are going to be our best customers." Now he wants to follow this game around to see if it is different players every time. We'll see if my paitence can hold out.
